Communicate openly and directly with your staff about concerns, challenges and, more importantly, solutions. Make your staff members feel 100% vested in your program. And, don’t forget to recognize your staff members for positive actions.

  • CFO has a staff outing each 4th of July week where the gym is closed, and they rent a condo on the beach.  It is a great opportunity for them to work on choreography and get the creative juices flowing.

  • Everyone helped to create a staff evaluation to make sure everyone is on the same page
  • Everyone has a hand in creating policies/curriculum
  • Staff retreat at end of season
  • Most successful team coaches have to put on a musical at end of year (lip sync)

  • Have LOTS of staff outings
  • Only hire “cheer freaks” – this will ensure they stay engaged in cheer
  • Send them to conferences to continue learning and to have a great time
  • Allow them to go to Worlds and other cheer competitions to watch and get new ideas

  • Hold mandatory staff meetings:
    • Housekeeping, updates, etc.
    • Highlight the compliments that staff has received from their customers as well as complaints. 
    • Gym runs much more effectively after staff meetings
    • Keep everyone updated and accountable is important to keeping them motivated to work.

  • Personal Relationships with staff – they are colleagues, develop respect for them that is a mutual respect
  • NEVER reprimand your employee in public!
  • Set a goal as a company – If they achieve the goal, they get to go on a trip (Vegas, Mexico, etc) Ex: enrollment or wins
  • Take them out to dinner every now and then
  • Give your staff quotes to inspire and make jewelry for staff before competitions

    • Owners keep notes of what they see/observe through-out the week

  • Might seem small, but doesn’t require staff to wear specific clothes to teach
  • Don’t force instructors to teach classes they don’t want to - allows them the choice.
